Fresh from the successes in 2018 and 2019 of their Sport with a Purpose expeditions spearheaded by Dame Kelly Holmes, Orbis Expeditions are launching no less than 10 new Sport with a Purpose expeditions to Malawi in 2020 led by UK Sports Personalities, past Olympians and England Captains.
Orbis Expeditions is a Devon based Tour Operator that specialises exclusively in trips to Malawi in conjunction with their Malawi-based sister company The Responsible Safari Company. Their ‘Sport with a Purpose’ Expeditions to Malawi are designed to promote various different sport disciplines in the Southern African country, including trail running, cycling, rugby, hockey, netball, boxing, judo, kayaking, football & cricket.
Each Expedition will be led by a UK Sports Personality, past Olympians and England Captains, and will highlight the benefit of sport to health & wellbeing, as well as bringing valuable international exposure to the sports organisations working tirelessly on the ground in Malawi with minimal resources.
Individuals including Dame Kelly Holmes, Dame Katherine Grainger, Mark Beaumont (BEM), Sarah Outen (MBE), Rachel Morris (MBE), Ollie Phillips and many more will headline different sports programmes, raising awareness and vital funds for a number of different projects, including infant malnutrition, mental health, youth cycling and a number of different sports training academies.
With 10x challenges being launched in 2020 and an additional 5x in 2021, there will be plenty to get involved with! Detailed below are the trips and personalities already confirmed for 2020. Orbis will also be hosting challenges in Football, Hockey, Netball, Boxing & Sports Coaching, each headed by a UK Sports personality in their respective fields. And added to all of those in 2021 will be Cricket, Volleyball, Judo, Basketball, Marathon, Triathlon & Scouts/Guides.
The Orbis Cycle Challenge with Mark Beaumont
Join adventurer and British Cycling inspiration, Mark Beaumont (BEM), as he takes on the inaugural Orbis Cycling Challenge. A 7 day Cycling Adventure through Malawi, raising awareness for youth sport and education in Malawi. Mark has teamed up with the Orbis Expeditions team to put together an incredible route through Southern Malawi, taking in some of the countries most stunning and diverse landscapes, including tea estates, trails of Mulanje Mountain, Zomba Plateau and the shores of Lake Malawi. The team will also spend time with local communities and take part in events with local youth groups, passionate about sport.
The Orbis ‘All Inclusive’ Challenge with Rachel Morris
Join Paralympian Rachel Morris (MBE) as she takes on The Orbis All Inclusive. A 7 day challenge, pushing the boundaries of trail running and kayaking, whilst taking in some of Malawi’s most beautiful regions. Following closely in Dame Kelly Holmes footsteps, The Orbis All Inclusive combines three sporting challenges: two trail runs and one kayak on Lake Malawi. With time spent visiting communities, inspiring youth initiatives and raising awareness for disability in Sport. The Orbis All Inclusive will be a positive platform, highlighting what can be achieved when a team comes together and pushes themselves mentally and physically, in a unique setting.
The Orbis Hiking Challenge with Sarah Outen
Sarah Outen (MBE) is a record-breaking British adventurer, author, speaker and film maker. In 2009 she became the first woman and youngest person to row solo across the Indian Ocean from Australia to Mauritius at the age of 24, and at that time was the youngest woman to row solo across any ocean. In 2011 she embarked on her London2London:Via the World journey, traversing the Northern Hemisphere by rowing boat, bike and kayak over 4 1⁄2 years. An advocate for openness around mental health and access to the outdoors, Sarah is proud patron of a number of youth, health and adventure charities. Sarah will lead 20 international participants on a 7x day expedition to climb Mount Mulanje in Southern Malawi, Central Africa’s highest freed standing mountain, raising funds for mental health in Malawi.
The Orbis Rugby Challenge with Ollie Phillips
Join Ollie Phillips, the most successful England Rugby Sevens captain, World Rugby Seven’s 2009 player of the year & 2011 Overseas Player of the Year, as he leads an expedition of 30 rugby enthusiasts on a 7x day Rugby coaching expedition to Central Malawi. Ollie led England to three World Series Cup victories, including New Zealand, as well as six finals. Ollie combined successful careers in both the 15-a-side game, with four clubs in England and France, and the Olympic version, Rugby Sevens. Since retiring from rugby, Ollie has volunteered as a charity ambassador and in 2018 set up ‘Optimist Performance’, through which he works with companies and individuals by speaking and consulting in the core areas of Teamwork, Leadership, Resilience and Change.
