The Nyika-Vwaza (UK) Trust, who work in North Malawi and focus on environment and wildlife conservation in the Nyika National Park and Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, have released their Spring 2023 newsletter.
This newsletter begins with a note of thanks to sponsors that lead the trust to where it is today, with a more recent surprise from Dr David Happold, a long-term member of their Technical Advisory Group. David has recently made a significant donation through his Happold Africa Fund to be utilised for environmental projects in Malawi. David was a visiting professor at the University of Malawi in Zomba in 1993/4. In collaboration with his wife, Meredith, he conducted long-term studies on small mammals, the results of which appeared in many local and international journals. Their book, ‘The Mammals of Malawi’ has recently been made available, free, as a pdf which can be found in the newsletter.
Also in this newsletter is a report of the success and the future goals working with the Lilongwe Wildlife Trust (LWT). In the last newsletter, Clement Manjaaleera reported on the achievements of the six-year environmental education programme, which took place in communities around Malawi’s protected areas in the north of the country. LWT have built on that experience by getting Environmental Education written into the Malawi national primary school curriculum. A huge achievement for all involved! Find out more about this programme in the newsletter.
Although by now the Trust has usually announced their annual Fundraising Event, this year is different, due to a change in strategy for their funded programmes. The Trust will hold an event, but can only confirm the speaker and date once they have firmed up plans and are in a position to offer a speaker linked to their new strategy. Details will be announced in due course.
Finally, plenty of other research and studies are included in the newsletter thanks to the tireless efforts from professionals and passionate volunteers that lend their time to the Trust.
