This year’s Mount Mulanje Porters Race will take place in Malawi on Saturday, 9th July 2022
After a two-year break due to Covid 19 pandemic, the Africa’s ultimate challenge is back. The Mount Mulanje Porters Race is Malawi’s only extreme sport that has attracted the attention of sports lovers both locally and internationally. The annual race attracts male and female runners as they travel a distance of approximately 25km up and across the Mount Mulanje Biosphere Reserve. The 24th Mount Mulanje Porters Race is scheduled as per tradition on second Saturday of the month of July, falling on the 9th July 2022 for this years instalment.
The race is open to all interested athletes who are fit enough to participate in running from Likhubula Forest Office, right at the foot of the mountain. The runners trek to Chambe Plateau about 2,500m above sea level then proceed (via the plateau) to Lichenya Plateau and back to Likhubula. Runners could cover a tiring distance of 25km in 2 hrs in which would usually take 10 hours at a walking pace. There are even competitors that run barefoot!
Established in 1996, the Porters Race was a competition originally limited to Porters and Guides of Mount Mulanje. It became an annual event attracting other participants – initially local and national athletes. Over the years, it has become an international event that attracts hundreds of participants from around the globe and attracting over 5000 spectators. Amongst the participants will be athletes from across Africa, Europe, America and Asia.
The marathon is open to both local and international runners, with every participant required to pay a small registration fee which will be announced later by the organisers.
