The Run4Reforestation will return for its 8th year on 6 September 2025, inviting runners, walkers, cyclists, and nature lovers from around the world to take part in a day of sport with purpose on the stunning Zomba Plateau – or virtually from anywhere on Earth.
This annual event combines the challenge of three prize-winning trail races – 5km (Easy), 10km (Fair), and 21km (Very Challenging) – with a mission to raise vital funds and awareness for TREEZ (The Reforestation of the Environment and Ecosystem of Zomba). TREEZ works to protect and restore Malawi’s unique and endangered forest ecosystems while creating sustainable livelihoods for local communities.
Malawi faces some of the highest deforestation rates in the world, with devastating impacts on biodiversity, water security, soil health, and rural livelihoods. TREEZ tackles this crisis by employing and training local community members to protect existing forests, enable natural regeneration, and prevent destructive fires during the dry season.
Healthy forests mean healthy communities: they safeguard water sources, reduce erosion, improve soil fertility, and provide habitat for countless species. As TREEZ co-founder Petal Wimbush explains:
“TREEZ is not just about protecting trees – it’s about protecting people. Our forests are the source of life here, and when we lose them, we lose water, soil, food security, and resilience. The Run4Reforestation is about taking action together for the good of our planet and our communities.”
Date: Saturday 6 September 2025
Location: Zomba Plateau (Sunbird Ku Chawe) or virtually from anywhere in the world
Distances & Difficulty:
• 5km – Easy – 9:00am start
• 10km – Fair – 8:30am start
• 21km – Very Challenging – 8:00am start
Entrance Fees: MK5,000 (Malawian residents) | MK20,000 (Non-residents)
Registration: From 7:00am on the day
Virtual Participation: Participants anywhere in the world can set their own challenge – run, walk, cycle, swim, or dance – and raise funds for TREEZ
All funds raised go directly to neighbouring communities for their work in reforestation, fire prevention, and environmental protection. This not only safeguards the Plateau’s ecosystem but also provides much-needed income for rural households.
Over the years, TREEZ has worked with local communities and the Forestry Department to protect and regenerate over 250 hectares of forest, including the beautiful “Enchanted Forest” on the Plateau’s south-western slopes. Contributions from the 2025 race will help expand these efforts, restoring degraded areas, boosting biodiversity, and ensuring the Zomba Plateau remains a source of water, beauty, and life for generations to come.
Those outside Malawi can also join the movement – setting their own challenge and raising funds for TREEZ through the Enthuse page: https://treez.enthuse.com/profile
The 2025 Run4Reforestation is presented by TREEZ and Zomba Forest Lodge, with support from Sunbird Hotels, First Capital Bank, The Orbis Foundation, and Zomba Private Ambulance.
