Rugby fans and adventure-seekers are being invited to join two of the UK’s best-known rugby broadcasters for a special trip to Malawi combining community engagement, fundraising and a three-day trek through some of the country’s spectacular landscapes.
From 31 March to 8 April 2027, former England rugby international and TV pundit David “Flats” Flatman and leading sports commentator Alastair “Ali” Eykyn will travel to Malawi with Bhubesi Pride Foundation (BPF) for its Spirit of Malawi adventure. Additional participants are now being sought to join the group.
The journey begins at Bhubesi Pride Foundation’s community centre in rural Lilongwe, where participants will meet BPF’s Malawian team and local coaches before spending a full day engaging with young people through sport and community activities.
BPF has a long association with Malawi. Having grown from an international rugby coaching programme, the charity established a permanent community centre in the country and today has a team of 12 Malawian staff and 50 coaches delivering sport and supplementary education programmes to more than 3,000 young people.
Following their time in Lilongwe, the group will head north to the Viphya Plateau for a challenging three-day trek towards Lake Malawi.
The route begins with an 18km hike through the highlands around Luwawa, followed by a 22km day crossing the plateau and ridges around Kawandama Mountain at around 2,000 metres. The final 16km section descends through indigenous forest and woodland before reaching the shores of Lake Malawi.
After time to relax at the lake, participants will return to Lilongwe for a final night at Kumbali Lodge before beginning their journey home.
David Flatman won eight caps for England during his playing career and has since become a familiar face and voice across ITV Sport and TNT, including coverage of the Rugby World Cup.
Alastair Eykyn has almost three decades of experience in national television and radio and is currently a lead commentator with TNT Sports, covering Premiership rugby and international sport.
The trip costs £3,450 per person, covering six nights’ catered accommodation, managed camping arrangements, transport and logistics within Malawi, meals, bottled water, lake activities and local taxes and fees.
International flights, travel insurance, drinks, inoculations, visas and personal expenses are not included. Participants are also asked to raise a minimum of £2,000 for Bhubesi Pride Foundation, directly supporting its community programmes in Malawi.
