Lion to be Introduced to Malawi's Majete Wildlife Reserve

In August, Malawi's Majete Wildlife Reserve will become the proud recipient of four lions from South Africa, completing the return of the 'Big Five' to this iconic reserve situated in Malawi's lower Shire River valley.

The reintroduction of lions marks a significant milestone in the rehabilitation of the 70 000 hectare Majete reserve. Historically lions were considered to be common in the Lower Shire Valley but by the early 1960s scouts in Majete were recording only one lion every 100 patrol days. Over the years, poaching took its toll and there have been no reports of lions in the region since the 1980s.

Rare and Plentiful Wildlife Sightings at Malawi's Mvuu and Chelinda Camps & Lodges

Guests at Mvuu camp and Lodge have been hearing Titus the lion roaring again and staff are sure that it's only a matter of time until there's another sighting of him. There are plans to give the lion population in Liwonde a boost, by introducing a few lionesses into the park sometime in August. All fingers are crossed in the hope that the lion re-introduction will go smoothly as planned and help raise the status of Liwonde to a big five national park.

Plentiful & Varied Wildlife at Wilderness Camps and Lodges

Although less frequent, guests can still see elephant out on the river despite the rains. Whenever staff spot elephant on the river, they get all the guests on an impromptu boat safari, so they can have a better look. Most elephant sightings however are occurring in the mopane woodlands around the park during game drives. Zebra sightings have been encouraging throughout the month, usually herds of bashful zebra scatter when they hear approaching game vehicles, they now seemed to have adjusted to the sound and appear more relaxed.

There was a sighting of approximately 20 banded Mongoose . This is an exceptionally big group to be spotted at Mvuu. The Banded Mongoose lives in permanent and cohesive groups consisting of on average 15 adults with their offspring. Group sizes in this species are largest for all carnivores. Both male and female transfer to new packs, and in this manner population gene flow is accomplished. On the same day a huge number of red velvet mites were spotted in the area. The minute red insect dancing across the earth is stunning at first glance although you need a microscope to really appreciate it!

One female hippo was seen with a one week old calf in a little pool in the mopane woodlands near the river. One theory goes that a female hippo seems to somehow know the sex of her calf before giving birth, a pregnant cow that has a male calf in her will often leave her family group to give birth in a separate river or dam. The dominant male reacts very aggressively to new males trying to join his family group even if the newborn is his own, so for this reason the pregnant female leaves the group to give birth and stay on her own with the newborn male calf until he is strong enough to move quickly and hopefully avoid dangerous confrontations with the dominant bull when they rejoin the rest of the family. Judging from this hippo's separation from the rest of the pod, staff are guessing this newcomer at Mvuu is a little boy.

30 sable were spotted near the staff road. The flourishing vegetation growing throughout the park (thanks to the rains) provides the park's elusive antelope herds with the ideal conditions for grazing and they now venture out into the open to feed more frequently.

A Southern File snake was seen near the Mvuu workshop. This snake is often much sought after due to its rarity and beauty. It has a distinctly triangular shape with keeled scales. Whilst it will gladly make a meal of lizards and small vertebrates, its feeding preference is actually other snakes.

Pel's Fishing Owls have been spotted closer to both the camp and lodge this month perched on top of a tree near that the camp dining area.

A sub adult African Cuckoo Hawk was spotted opposite Mvuu Camp. This medium sized raptor is mostly solitary and can be seen flying from tree to tree with short glides. Grey Headed Parrots were seen in large numbers nesting in Baobab trees on Msanje Road.

One guest spotted a total of 69 new bird species on their visit to Mvuu this month. Adding to a month of great birding were sightings off Red-backed Shrike, Retz's Helmet-Shrike, White Helmet-Shrike, Blue-checked Bee-eater, European Bee-eater, Carmine Bee-eater, Brown Snake Eagle, Crowned Eagle, African Hawk Eagle, Dickinson's Kestrel, Lillian's Lovebird and African Harrier-Hawk. We also spotted Brown- Headed Parrot, Arnot's Chat, White-backed Night Heron, Livingstone's Flycatcher, Wahlberg's eagle and thrush Nightingale.

Chelinda Camp and Chelinda Lodge

Many herds of antelope and zebra have been seen often seeking refuge in the pine forests during the night before they return to the grasslands to graze in the mornings.

Hyaena are back on the plateau and are up to their usual tricks: they strategically chase their prey into the dams where they find it easier to make a kill. Chelinda can now fully confirm the presence of wild dog on the Nyika as one of their guides saw one with his own eyes.

A serval cat and female leopard were spotted near the Airstrip. On February 17th a big male leopard was seen and on February 20th, another leopard was seen by Chelinda Bridge bringing the total leopard count for the month to three.

A herd of 10-15 elephants were seen near Chisanga Waterfall. Seeing such a big herd on the plateau is very rare, usually only a lone elephant is seen once in a while or small herd consisting of up to nine animals at most.

Augur buzzards have started to congregate in groups and on one afternoon drive 11 were spotted together. Other good birds spotted at Chelinda this month include Montane widow bird, Montagu's Harrier, Pallid Harrier, Hildebrandt's Francolin, Mountain Cisticola, Black cuckoo shrike, Lizard buzzard and a melanistic Augur Buzzard. Melanism, or melanosis, is a condition caused by a genetic mutation that gives a bird excess amounts of melanin in its feathers. This makes the feathers much darker than normal plumage, and many melanistic birds appear completely brown or black.

Mumbo's Spring Clean & a New Yacht!

After the rains, Mumbo Island Resort's staff head out to the island to make everything sparkly and fresh! Cushions are re-covered in local chitenje cloth, which Billy the Tailor sews on his treadle Singer sewing machine; James the carver and his helpers polish every carving and board game; Jurie and the carpenters replace all the wooden boards and planks that need it; Mr Kafkuta and Mr Chaidon replace any old reed work; the chefs empty the entire kitchen, scrub it from top to bottom and then wash everything and put it all back; the island teams take everything out of every tent, scrub down the whole tent and then replace it all! Everything now looks fabulous, fresh and gorgeous. Trhoughout this the the island resounded with the sounds of laughter and joking. Got to love Malawi!

Malawi's Abundant & Flourishing Wildlife

The wildlife around Mvuu Camp and Mvuu Lodge certainly isn't shying away. More than 1000 baby crocodiles have been seen along the river near the Mvuu Lodge lagoon recently along with some impressive elephant sightings. A herd of 80 elephants with a string of calves were spotted near Nangando, south of Ntangai with one of the larger bulls in the herd uspected to be in musth. (During cyclical periods of 'musth' bull elephants are at their most aggressive and sexually active stage).

Over 100 buffalo were seen in the rhino sanctuary along with 2 black rhinos,18 Lichtenstein's hartebeest, 11 sables and 31 zebras. Not to mention the side-striped sand snake that was seen sneaking up on a bird's nest! The rains bring with them many migrant birds who come back from the less hospitable climates north of the equator. Regular recent spottings include Ospreys, African Fish Eagles, White Breasted Cormorants, Bohm's, Bee-eaters, Woodland Kingfishers, Pied Kingfishers, Malachite Kingfishers, Lillian's Lovebirds and many more. Among the rarer species spotted were the Crossbreeding Blacksmith's and Spur-winged Lapwings which are bringing up chicks.

In a complex translocation project that took months to prepare, the first consignment of two young leopards were flown to Malawi on Friday 7th October 2011 on-board a private Beechcraft KingAir piloted by Dr Ivan Marx. Wildlife vet Dr. Heinrich Muller had to tranquilise both animals for the duration of the ten hour journey and keep a constant vigil due to the length of time involved.

Malawi Triumphs for Africa in WHL's Local Travel Experts Awards

WHL Group is the largest local-travel company in the world. Both a global network of companies that help travellers find unique ways to experience a destination through local tourism professionals, and a technology provider to those local tourism operators. WHL Group companies empower local partners who have practice in experiential and mindful travel, and a local's knack for identifying, explaining and sustaining the distinctive qualities of a place.

Based on their work in 2011, four tour operators - one from each of four broad geographical areas - were singled out as models for a set of whl.travel standards critical to the operation of their own businesses but also fundamental to the success of the global network. Assessment criteria included response times and customer service, maintaining an active social media presence and keeping destination Web portals up to date.

Taking honors in Africa was the Responsible Safari Company, the whl.travel local connection for Malawi. Apart from demonstrating a strong commitment to community development through sustainable tourism initiatives, they have proven that they are serious about client services. RSC fought off competition from 40 destinations across 20 countries.

Wildlife Galore in Malawi's Liwonde: Rainy Season Highlights!

The rains are making for a wet and wonderful playground for wildlife across Malawi this season.
The elephants at Mvuu Lodge are forming big herds and there have been sightings of several baby elephants including a couple of newborns. Along with the rains, many impala, bushbuck and warthogs are now giving birth to their young and Liwonde is becoming a realm of intriguing new activity.

Mvuu's boat safaris are also proving quite dramatic. The Shire is teaming with crocodiles enjoying the rains but competing for food. Some amazing escapes by bushbuck have been spotted by guests as lone swimmers make a dash for the other shore. Tense stuff!

Credit Suisse & The Roger Federer Foundation in Malawi

As part of the sponsorship partnership established between Credit Suisse and Roger Federer in 2009, 1 million US dollars is being channeled into the Roger Federer Foundation (RFF) each year until 2019. The RFF is investing the majority of these additional funds in a new project supporting early childhood education in Malawi.

In further partnership with ActionAid, there are now plans to build, renovate and operate 80 centers across the country. Over the next 5-9 years, 60,000 children stand to benefit directly from their services. The plan is for these 'model' institutions to also be made available to carers from other centers and parents for training purposes, enabling 16,000 needy families with an estimated 92,000 children to benefit from the centers' services either directly or indirectly.

Malawi's Mumbo Island Resort Ranked in Top 100 Hotels in the World!

Kayak Africa are delighted to announce that Mumbo Island was chosen as one of the Top 100 Hotels in the World in the UK Sunday Times Travel Magazine! Not only that, they were one of only 10 hotels listed from the entire African and Asian continent. This is what they said:

'Mumbo Island, Lake Malawi:
Fancy an island almost to yourself? This uninhabited dollop is laden with delicate miombo woodland, all edged by neon green waters. There are only seven tents, with hammocks and hot-bucket showers. It often feels as though it's just you and the crickets. Oh, and the playful otters which like to join guests for afternoon dips.'

New Entry Fees for Malawi's National Parks

Malawi's Department of National Parks and Wildlife Reserves has announced a change to Park Fees in Malawi with immediate effect. Although there has been a rise, they still remain extremely low, and among the cheapest on the continent, at just US$10 a day for foreign visitors.

Malawi is blessed with a rich diversity of flora and fauna and has no less than nine National Parks or Wildlife Reserves. There's an ever increasing number of animals offering excellent game viewing experiences whilst the number of lodges in parks remains low. This ensures protection of each area and brilliant exclusivity for vistors (without the high prices charged for it in neighbouring countries).

Expert Africa's MD, Chris McIntyre, visited in May 2011 and commented, 'I'd not been to Malawi for years, but wanted to go to see the new developments at Majete.' His trip included Zambia's South Luangwa National Park, a number of places in Malawi and also Nkwichi Lodge in Mozambique. Although Expert Africa is the UK's largest tour operator to Zambia, and has featured Malawi for many years, McIntyre says that Malawi always appeals to a few travellers, but demand for it is 'never huge'.

Malawian Wildlife: Dramatic and Flourishing!

Malawi's wildlife is flourishing for all to see as seasons change and animals display their majesty in an often dramatic (or comical) fashion.

Near to Mvuu Camp and Lodge, the Ntangai stream is proving a popular playground for Titus, the superb male lion who has taken up residence in the park . He recently allowed guests observation of him for a full 45 minutes whilst he attempted to catch a fully grown bushpig!

One of several black rhino sightings became a once in a lifetime experience for some guests when a rhino mock charged a vehicle during a game drive into the ESCOM sanctuary. In its way lay a sable bull who was forced to get up abruptly to avoid the rhino. After his feisty display, the rhino retreated into the thickets to rest a while.
