Malawi's Lodges: Awards & Developments Posted on: Monday, February 19, 2018

2018 promises to be a fantastic year for Malawi! The country’s amazing conservation projects hit the headlines in 2017 and it’s now being widely lauded as a ‘hot’ destination. Keeping pace with these developments and accolades, Malawi’s lodges are also now making great impressions, with exciting new properties being opened and its existing lodges winning awards and starting to stand out from the crowd across Africa and worldwide.

Two of Malawi’s top lodges, Tongole and Kaya Mawa, led the way at the recent Safari Awards for 2018, claiming wins in no less than 5 of the 16 categories, judged across the whole of Africa. That’s more than any other country bar South Africa.  With Nkwichi Lodge (strictly in Mozambique but on the shores of Lake Malawi and very much part of Malawi’s tourism circuit) weighing in with wins on a global scale, taking home two categories at the World Travel Awards, Malawi’s lodges have taken Africa by storm this year!

Perhaps even more exciting, in a country where development has been slow and steady for many years, is that there are now new lodges opening up. Kachenga Bush Camp is a sister property to Tongole and has just opened in the fast emerging Nkhotakota Wilderness Reserve, and in Liwonde National Park (which has just received cheetah and has lions coming in 2018), Kuthengo Camp will soon be opened by renowned safari company Robin Pope Safaris.

As Malawi goes through the most exciting period of tourism development in its history, its visitors can sleep easy knowing that they will have amazing new and award-winning lodges to choose from!

Tongole Wilderness Lodge wins 'best in Africa' awards

The 2018 Safari Awards, held at the World Travel Market in London on 6th November saw huge success for Tongole Wilderness Lodge, as they proudly received Best in Africa awards in three categories - Best Community Focused Safari property in Africa, Best Ecologically Responsible Safari property in Africa, Best Value Safari property in Africa. The three wins and a couple more third places, made them the most successful individual Lodge at the Awards.

Tongole Wilderness Lodge was conceived with two main objectives. Firstly, to establish an eco-friendly business that would create employment opportunities and long-term benefits for people, and secondly to provide a sustainable link between tourism, conservation and communities around the reserve.

Tongole has proved itself to be an ethical and responsible safari destination, whilst offering the highest standards in all aspects of guest experience. The lodge is perfectly situated, overlooking the Bua River in the heart of Malawi’s Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve (NWR).

Nkwichi Wins Big at World Travel Awards

No longer Africa's best kept secret, Nkwichi Lodge is thrilled to announce that they have been voted and declared the winners of two categories in this year's World Travel Awards – Africa’s Leading Green Hotel and Responsible Tourism 2017.

More than a lodge, Nkwichi is a complete experience offering a unique taste of Africa with exquisite lakeside scenery and unparalleled tranquillity. With its unique, all-embracing approach to tourism over the last 15 years, Nkwichi is intrinsically linked to the surrounding communities and their natural environment. Nkwichi is an integral part of the Manda Wilderness Project, an initiative designed by Nkwichi’s investors to bring the communities of the area together and help them use their environment and resources sustainably, making sure it brings the concrete benefits they need.

Kaya Mawa Wins 'Best Cuisine' Award

Kaya Mawa took home two of the most hotly contended Africa awards; Best Cuisine and Most Romantic Property in Africa. Kaya Mawa is everything an African paradise should be; soaring baobab trees, mango groves, untouched coves and beaches, dirt roads leading to cassava fields and small fishing settlements. Visitors are drawn to swimming and snorkeling with the greatest diversity of fish anywhere on the planet in Lake Malawi.

Kachenga Bush Camp opens in Nkhotakota

Deep within the Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, nearby Tongole Wilderness Lodge, is the newly opened Kachenga Bush Camp. Surrounded by bushland and wildlife, the camp offers guests a perfect location for their exploration of Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve.

As well as having superb lake, landscape, culture, and recent transformations of its wildlife, Malawi’s safari experiences are now starting to match its other attractions, making it perhaps the most complete destination the continent, offering the ideal opportunity to experience real Africa.
