As a widely recognised up-and-coming African destination Malawi is quite often the subject of hot travel gossip and articles. Malawi regularly appears in global 'Top Ten' lists and whilst every journalist has a different experience in Malawi, they all return inspired. Please click on the links below to see what well known magazines such as Wanderlust, online sites such as the Huffington Post and national broadsheet such as The Guardian have to say!

December 2014 

The world’s largest online newspaper, the Huffington Post identified its Top Emerging Travel Hotspots for 2015, and placed Malawi at Number 1 -  the very top of its list!! What an accolade! As they so rightly say: “Lake Malawi stuns travelers with vast powder-sand beaches and luxury havens in a spot of authentic paradise” Click here to take a look at the article.

 

Top UK experiential travel magazine, Journeys ran a 7 page feature on Malawi by journalist Nick Redmayne, who highlighted what a great country it is for self drive: “Stunning scenery and Africa’s friendliest people greet Nick Redmayne on a solo drive around a mountainous corner of Malawi”. Each year Lonely Planet magazine selects the ‘most extraordinary travel experiences’ from all that they have covered recently and presents them in a new ‘bookazine’, this year called ‘Dream Trips for 2015’. Malawi was one of the 9 chosen and the stunning article from the magazine earlier in the year was reproduced second, along with a couple of extra pages of pictures. Outdoor Enthusiast was the latest publication to highlight the great trekking that’s available on Malawi’s mountain gem, Mulanje. Author Lucy was suitably impressed: “For me , this was a quiet journey through a heavenly wilderness, taken at a steady pace that gave me time to be completely captivated by the landscape.” Volume 11, Issue 3, Outdoor Enthusiast:

Dive journalist Scott Bennett visited Lake Malawi on behalf of Scuba Diver-Ocean Planet magazine. With great coverage of the lake and its colourful fish, he concluded that “Malawi’s subtropical waters offer easy, relaxed diving with no currents, calm conditions and decent visibility. But it is Lake Malawi’s dramatic scenery and remarkable biodiversity that set it apart – the Lake of Stars is dazzling. And unlike anywhere else on Earth.” View the PDF here.

Africa Geographic continued to give great coverage to Malawi, including Majete Reserve’s Mkulumadzi Lodge in its round up of The Best Eco-Safari Destinations and giving us some great cocktail recipes courtesy of the company behind Mkulumadzi and sister lodge Pumulani, Robin Pope Safaris: Summer Cocktail Recipes article here and best eco safaris destinations here. 

‘5 of the Wildest African Rift Valley Lakes’ was the title of an article on ‘A Luxury Travel Blog this month. Of course Lake Malawi appeared: “This incredible lake has white sandy beaches and turquoise waters similar to that of the Indian Ocean ….One can .. enjoy a truly wild and relaxing beach holiday here.” Read the blog post here.

Gogobot is a travel website that offers ‘the best travel tips for destinations around the world’. In her article on ‘Malawi: Mother Nature’s Wonderland’, Anisha Shah gives plenty of reasons why Malawi is a must! Take a look at the article here.

International media giant CNN continued with yet more coverage of Malawi with a programme in its African Voices series about Malawian poet ‘Q’ (video in 3 parts): Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 here 

The Mail & Guardian focussed on the Lake for a photo-based piece ‘Scenes from Lake Malawi – one of Africa’s most beautiful natural paradises’. Some lovely images that you can see here.

Popular African Lodge Blog, Tongabezi Blog House, decided to encourage its readers to visit Africa by rounding ’10 Places where the magic happens in Africa’. Lake Malawi was at Number 1! Click here to read the blog post.

November 2014 

Africa Geographic publishes premier magazines and blogs celebrating Africa to an international audience. They covered Malawi extensively this month, with two features on the masks and dances of Malawi’s Chewa tribe in their main magazine, and a couple of blog entries on specific Malawi experiences: African Dance article, African masks article, Canoeing with elephants article and travelling to Nkwichi article here.

 

Sid The Wanderer is an Indian travel blogger who was in Malawi recently. He posted a few entries about his trek up Mount Mulanje last month and this month he reviewed a couple of Sunbird properties: Lilongwe Sunbird review here and Salima Beach here.
 

Destinations: the Holiday & Travel Show is a large travel show in the UK in Jan/Feb each year. With a Malawi stand booked for the 15 year in a row, the show website also featured a Malawi holiday in its newsletter and on its Holiday of the Week pages. Click here to take a look 

Malawi made it into yet another ‘Top Ten’ – this time it was The Herald in Scotland detailing the ’Top Ten Destinations to bring in the New Year’. Click here to see the article.

October 2014 

The UK’s only Africa-specialist travel magazine, Travel Africa, continued with its regular coverage of Malawi. Its Autumn edition featured Malawi’s little visited, but ‘awe-inspiring’ Nyika National Park. Travel Africa, Summer Edition: Click here and Look at page 28 to see the article

Dutch travel site Reishonger published a Southern Africa Special, giving a short summary of each of the countries in the region, including Malawi. Click here to take a look

Malawi’s wondrous but still relatively little visited Mount Mulanje (the ‘island in the sky’ containing the highest peaks in Central Africa) was the subject of a couple of pieces of coverage this month as two bloggers described their ascents of the mountain:

With Malawi’s famous Lake of Stars Festival happening at the end of September, so coverage of this ever-popular event stared to appear in October. This included travel blogs and key Africa media. And the Festival is always makes it into a few ‘Top Ten’ Lists!: Africa Geographic here, African budget Safaris here and Donnatruly here.

With relations between Scotland and Malawi going strong, The Scotsman newspaper was quick to cover the Lake of Stars Festival, and the presence of a number of Scottish participants at this ever-popular Festival.  Click here to view the article.

Jonathan Gregson was the photographer sent to Malawi by Lonely Planet Magazine last year. His collection of images was simply stunning and they are still capturing the imagination. This month, a Facebook posting of one of a Malawi elephant quickly attracted over 1000 likes here.

Birding Blogger Margaret Adamson enjoyed her time at Malawi’s Game Haven, spotting 3 new birds. Have a look at the blog here

September 2014 

The Oldie is a magazine targeted to those of more advancing years! Malawi-phile Janie Hampton urged its readers to visit Malawi in an entertaining article covering the country. “Lovely lodges, Africa’s third-largest lake, dinners served on the beach and big game if you want it. Janie Hampton is captivated by the continent’s best kept secret” September 2014, The Oldie. Download the PDF here

Swiss travel magazine Fernweh also covered the varied attractions of Malawi in its October edition, which came out this month, courtesy of German Tour operator Jacana.Tours. See the PDF here.

International Travel Guide publisher, Rough Guides rounded up ‘Eight Amazing Canoeing and Kayaking Trips’, with Kayaking on Lake Malawi second on its list. View the article here.

Hayo is a new online travel and lifestyle magazine., In their round up of ’15 of Africa’s Most Unbelievable Landscapes’, Malawi’s beautiful Mount Mulanje appeared 5th. 8 Sept 2014, Hayo Magazine: Click here to view.

In June, videographer Rob Sellar visited and travelled around Malawi. His resulting promotional film was posted up on YouTube in September. Watch the film here.

Top travel magazine Wanderlust reviews all the ways to go on safari in Africa. Malawi crops up as a recommended place for kayaking (lake Malawi) and boat safaris (Liwonde NP). Have a look at the article here

June 2014 

Not far out of Blantyre, Game Haven has send the last few years developing a 500 acre area of bush into a top class game park. For a bit of the parks history and to learn about all the developments, have a look at the article on Eglobaltravelmedia.com here

German magazine Afrikapost ran a 6 page article focussed on Majete Wildlife Reserve. With plenty of pictures of the lions, it was some lovely coverage. You can see all the article by clicking here

South African Airways’ inflight magazine is Sawubona and they included a preview of the Luwawa International Mountain Bike Race in Malawi in their Destination Africa round up. You can view a PDF opf the article here.

South Africa’s top travel magazine, Getaway ran a full 8 page feature on Malawi in its July issue, that included some stunning images by Tyson Jopson. Covering some of the highlights of the south of the country, including Zomba and the tea estates, it’s a cracking piece. You can see a PDF of it here

Getaway photographer Tyson Jopson also posted a beautifully illustrated and annotated list of ‘9 things to do in Southern Malawi that don’t involve the lake’ on the Getaway Blog and re-published on Yahoo. Fascinating fact: Lake Malawi was the site of one of the first naval battles of World War I! The 100 year anniversary of that was enough incentive for Janie Hampton to write an article detailing the event in History Today. It’s a fascinating story which you can read here.

La Línea del Horizonte is a Spanish blog/magazine about countries and their cultures. It has a number of contributors and their editorial objective is to deal with issues, people and places from a cultural perspective. They recently included an entry all about Lake Malawi’s Likoma Island which you can read here.

May 2014

It’s not often that Malawi’s hotels and lodges get full-on reviews by professional journalists, but that’s what happened to Sunbird Capital Hotel when Ramsey Quebin visited earlier this year. His detailed report appeared in Business Traveller recently and of course the hotel received a glowing write up! To read the review in its entirety click here

 

Filmed in 2010/11, a full length documentary about the Lake of Stars Festival has recently been published on YouTube: Stars in Malawi. At just under an hour, it gives a proper insight into what has become an institution of the international festival scene and a true highlight of Malawi. You can watch the video here.  
 

International media giant CNN picked their ’10 Dare to Go’ places for 2014 to highlight emerging destinations and placed Malawi second on their list! Noting about Malawi “Serene and friendly, it’s an easy place to visit”, they cover the key attractions of the lake, the wildlife, the friendly people and the stunning landscapes. A great accolade! April 2014

Escapism is a relatively new travel magazine that’s distributed to commuters in London. They did a round up of the world’s best beaches in their April edition and included Lake Malawi. They had contacted us for information and images and seemed to want to focus on Chitimba beach. We tired to get them to broaden out their approach, but to no avail.

Tour operator Real Africa put a blog entry on their site explaining ‘why Malawi should be on your wish list’. It gave a great overview of Malawi’s main attractions. To view the entry click here

Malawi’s Lake of Stars Festival made it into yet another top 10 listing. This time the ‘The top ten unique festival locations in the world’ from Virtual Festivals. Reise & Preise is one of Germany’s top travel magazines. A recent article covered the ‘Top 10 Island Paradises to a fall in love’ from around the world and Lake Malawi’s Likoma Island came in at No.6! You can view the article by clicking here

 

Travel Africa magazine continued its regular full length features on Malawi with an article by Malawi based photographer and writer, Frank Johnston. Having lived in Malawi for over 30 years, Frank was able to provide a wonderful ‘tour’ of the whole country and all its varied attractions. To view the article click here.  

Go See Write is a travel blog site run by Michael Hodson. It re-published the blog by Helen Davis on Malawi. Having world for a time in Zambia, she had no real expectations of Malawi’s Liwonde National Park, but it quickly became one of her favourite safari destinations: “I felt so lucky to be in such a beautiful place. But up until a couple of years ago, I’d never really thought of Malawi as a safari destination. However, that all changed when I took a trip to Liwonde National Park.” Click here to see the article.

The Born Free Foundation has been responsible for returning another lion from squalid conditions of captivity in Europe to their rightful home in Africa. With the help of sponsor Kenya Airways, Simba the lion has been taken to Malawi’s Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, to join up with Bella the one-eyed lioness transported there a couple of years ago. MSN Travel is one of the most visited travel websites in the world. South African Country Life magazine selected their top 6 Romantic Hideaways in their February issue to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Conde Nast Traveller is probably the world’s leading travel magazine. Their editors picked out their own choices for the best hotels in the world, to award them the Gold Standard 2014. German digital magazine ‘Travel Inspirations’ carries the tag line ‘Explore-Experience-Enjoy’ and is intended to give ideas and inspiration on destinations to potential travellers. In their Spring 2014 edition they focused on the safari destinations of Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe, using mostly images of Malawi to illustrate the magazine. Their February edition included an article by Sue Watt on African Parks and their ‘business approach to conservation’, focussing on her recent visit to Malawi’s Majete Reserve.
