Floods, Wildlife sightings and Community projects were the highlights from African Parks recent quarterly newsletter for Malawi’s Majete wildlife reserve  Catch up on the best bits below or you can click here to read the full newsletter.

Rhino, Leopard and Lion sightings

While the rains created some challenges for Majete in early January the rains brought a welcome relief to the Majete wildlife which had endured severe droughts in October and November of 2014. The rains brought an abundance of grass and bushes and vegetation grew quickly providing much needed nourishment to many of the starving animals. The bird life was prolific and zebra, lions and antelope returned to the tourism area of the reserve.

All rhino were sighted during this period with 110 rhino tracking patrols taking place. Lundu (male rhino) was seen with one of the females and her sub adult calf by guests on a game drive.

Two leopards were seen during this period by a guide and guests. One female was spotted in January near the Majete airfield and the second sighting was of a male who was moving in the grass close to the Nakamba hide.

Due to the rains the lions were seen on a daily basis in the tourism areas especially on the roads. On the 21st of January - Shire the female and the cubs were seen at Thawale Lodge waterhole for the first time and guests later saw them killing zebra. The two male lions were spotted together in many of the tourism areas including the campsite and Nsepete hide.

In March the two young lions Elizabeth and Michael were seen regularly away from Shire (female/mother) and the males. The female cub was photographed by a guest with a gash on her neck believed to have been inflicted by a horn from an antelope. It is suspected that Shire, the female may be pregnant again and she is being monitored to try and get a good sighting of her to verify this.

Community visits

Majete runs a community visit for overnight guests at Thawale and the Community Campsite where they experience the traditional lifestyles of Malawi and witness the age old customs of the a lower Shire Village. Guests can learn about the staple food of the area, view the traditional arts and crafts including mat and basket making, experience the traditional children's games such as Nguli, learn about the community income generating projects that have been established in the village and finally watch the amazing local masked 'Gule Wamkulu' dance and a variety of other cultural dances. For more photos and information see the following blog which appeared in Africa Geographic.

Donor supports environmental education programme

A private Dutch donor Anne Hoijer who in the past provided financial donations to build the Heritage, Educational Centre and Mwembezi restaurant is now funding the Environmental Education (EE) project in various communities with the assistance of the Majete community programme. While at Majete she also participated in a number of EE and extension activities such as tree planting and making presentations to school children. She also attended a prize presentation ceremony for winners of the 2014 Majete essay competition. The colorful function was attended by wildlife club members, patrons, journalists and APM staff.

Moringa powder production training

The community extension team conducted training for moringa powder processing as a potential community enterprise. (Moringa oleifera is beneficial to health because it has all essential amino acids and has widely been used to combat malnutrition especially in children and nursing mothers) Two moringa powder production trainings were conducted and attended by 20 people (11 women and 9 men).

Positive increase in numbers and revenue

In figures released in January, tourism numbers and revenue had increased in 2013 from 7,614 visitors to 8,012 in 2014.  Tourism revenue grew by 19% from 2013 to 2014.

The tourism team hosted two journalists from SAWABONA in-flight magazine for South African Airlines who plan to write a small feature on Majete in July 2015 as part of a larger article on Malawi in order to encourage more visitors to come to Malawi. In addition, Majete hosted Tourism Officer Maria Kantchentche from the Ministry of Tourism who was accompanied by Ms. Isabel Conway, a well renowned Irish journalist who plans to write articles on Malawi tourism for three Irish national broad sheet papers with readership of up to 900,000.

Help conserve and protect Malawi’s wildlife resource by visiting and staying at Malawi’s only protected area operated by African Parks. Majete Wildlife Reserve is a unique conservation and tourist destination for all visitors. The amazing success story of recovery and restoration and the continued protection of endangered species have led Majete to become one of the most popular reserves in Malawi.
