Malawi takes its coffee to Germany Posted on: Friday, July 25, 2014

This entry also features a German translation directly after the English post.

Coffee plays only a secondary role in Malawi, at least economically. Only two thousand metric tons of coffee being grown annually. Only half of that will find its way to other countries through exports. Overall, Malawi captures a negligible part of the World’s coffee trade. Nevertheless, coffee farmers from this small country between Tanzania and Zambia produce coffee quality they should be proud of.

The team from kafrika discovered just that: Malawi’s fine coffee. Early in May, specialty coffee online store “kafrika – africa’s finest coffee” opened its virtual doors. The name says it all: at kafrika, the three team members Lars Györvari, Hermann Sorg and Dietmar Beyer, focus 100% on African-sourced coffee beans. According to the founders, no other continent offers the same variety of natural aromas as Africa. Furthermore, Africa is coffee’s home continent as coffee was first discovered in Ethiopia.

There is nothing better than to strive for something that is fundamentally honest. Unfortunately, the honesty in coffee trade has in the past often been left by the wayside. Therefore, focusing on top quality, kafrika particularly aims for respectful and fair treatment of coffee farmers and the environment: "Consumption of coffee needs to be more sustainable, because this will be the only way people can lead a good life in the producing countries. Sustainability is best achieved by focusing on highest quality possible and cooperating with organizations such as the Rainforest Alliance. We are proud of our new coffee from Malawi, who also bears the seal of the Rainforest Alliance. In addition, some of the coffee from kafrika is also certified organic” says Lars Györvari, project leader at kafrika.

But the team of kafrika selects its specialty coffees not only on the basis of certified and sustainable methods of cultivation: each coffee has to be exceptional in taste and quality.  According to the cupping notes, the newly introduced Pamwamba Malawi exhibits tastes of caramel, dark chocolate and blackberries. Together with Germany's best coffee experts, the entire kafrika team tastes and selects Africa’s finest coffees which will then be offered in the online shop at kafrika.de. The founders at kafrika are convinced that coffee should not only serve as a quick buzz in the morning but should be celebrated and enjoyed every single day. “Coffee to go” is out - instead, the guys from kafrika prefer a real break from the hustle of everyday tasks to enjoy coffee more consciously. Coffee from Malawi is the ideal companion for that break.

Finally, for kafrika there is also the question of social responsibility. With the desire to turn coffee into an honest business again, is important to treat trading partners as equals instead of looking for the personal benefit only. Thus, kafrika supports entrepreneurs in some of the poorest parts of Africa through Micro – der Gute Kredit from World Vision. At the same time, these micro loans are being reinvested for the benefit of an entire community. Thus, a single donation will multiply and help on many different levels. Helping people help themselves is the motto here.

For questions and comments, do get in touch with the team of kafrika who is eager to hear from you: kontakt@kafrika.de.
