The Makokola Retreat , The Mangochi Lakeshore

Magnificently set on an unspoilt Palm Fringed Lakeshore North of Mangochi, The Makokola Retreat is the perfect retreat for discerning holiday makers who wish to relax, unwind and recuperate.  Stylish spacious rooms combine luxury with modern African décor.  The harmonious combination of lush gardens and 600 metres of wide Natural Sandy Beach makes this resort your dream destination.  This all season resort has become re-knowned for its excellent cuisine and personal service of a bygone era.

Guests can either fly for 30 minutes into Makokola’s own Aerodrome or drive for 3 hours from the two International Airports, Blantyre or Lilongwe.  International Charter or Private Flights can fly directly into The Makokola Retreat and clear Customs and Immigration at the Hotel.

Water Sports include parasailing, Catamarans, Sailing Dinghies, Snorkelling and Goggling, Water Skiing and the like.  Listen to the call of a Fish Eagle as you take a Siesta Sunset Cruise around Bird Island. For your convenience, an Olympic size Salt treated beach pool and Bar are at your disposal.

For the Golf enthusiast, the Mlambe Golf Club tucked amongst the Baobab Trees and a Natural Stream poses great challenge to the golfer.  Sometimes a visiting young Croc usually on hole number 9 makes the play even more exciting.  This is a par 3, 9 Hole course.  Close to the Golf Club, is a Flood-lit Bowling Green.  Excursions to the National Park, Zomba Plateau, Mua Mission or just the Fishing Village and other places of interest offering a true taste of Africa is always recommended.

This unspoilt beach resort is increasingly becoming the preferred Exclusive and Romantic Wedding Venue.

If you do not feel like sitting on the beach and read a book, you can contact the Front Desk and explore the country.  There are many Excursions available including Mangochi and the surrounding areas.  This is the place where Dr. David Livingstone 150 years ago saw for the first time, “The Lake of Stars”.

The Makokola Retreat also has the pleasure of presenting its Manja wa Lusa Lake Spa. It redefines the spa experience, providing total escapism that paradoxically encourages healing to arise from deep within the self. The nurturing and personal care at the Spa ensure a renewing experience that honors ancient traditions, while commemorating African nature.

Five treatment rooms are hidden in the lush gardens; each featuring a handcrafted roof and décor exquisitely accented with natural tropical woods, reflecting an African design.

In celebration of the African culture, very unique signature treatments using indigenous plant ingredients have been created. Massage techniques, facial and body works from all over the world are combined with ancient African holistic practices to create a truly unique Malawian experience.

Therapists use the healing essence of some of Africa’s indigenous plants and focus on capturing these special properties for a therapeutic experience on the body and face. From Baobab facials, Kigelia Africana wraps to Marula full body massages and more and all is done with that special personal touch.
Nothing is hurried at the Lake Spa. Relax, lie back and be pampered!
