Local Tour Operator Robin Pope Safaris gives us an insight in the various ways you can experience Lake Malawi...

Malawi may be land-locked, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a splendid beach holiday there. The palm-fringed, sandy shores of Lake Malawi provide just such a place.

With sparkling sapphire water stretching as far as the eye can see, it’s hard not to mistake Lake Malawi for a tropical paradise. Located between Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania, Lake Malawi is the third largest lake in Africa and the ninth largest in the world.

Dubbed the ‘Lake of Stars’ of David Livingstone, there are endless ways to explore waters and wild setting surrounding Lake Malawi, making it an ideal destination for a bush and beach getaway. Situated on the shores of the lake, Pumulani Lodge is the perfect place from which to explore the area. The team at Pumulani are no strangers to the wonders of Lake Malawi and encourage guests to get out there and see as much of it as possible.

These are a few of the Pumulani team’s favourite ways to experience Lake Malawi:

Dhow Cruise

Whether it be an early morning breakfast cruise or a magical sunset cruise, exploring the lake on a 40ft traditional, hand crafted dhow is one of the most relaxing ways to enjoy the tranquillity of Lake Malawi.

Water Sports

For those wanting to get their feet wet, water sports are the way to go and the options for what to do are endless. Snorkeling or diving in a secluded spot is a brilliant way to see the teeming life beneath the water’s surface. Lake Malawi probably hosts the largest number of fish species of any lake in Africa and offers some of the best freshwater diving and snorkelling in Africa.

Other, slightly more thrilling water activities that can be enjoyed on the lake are water-skiing, wakeboarding and tubing.

Guided Walk

The scenic hills surrounding Lake Malawi provide the perfect place for a hike. One of the best parts about hiking these hills is that when you reach the top, the views of Lake Malawi are simply breathtaking.

Relax on the Beach

The sandy shores of Lake Malawi are nothing short of paradise. While exploring the lake is always good fun, there is something incredibly peaceful about relaxing on the beach with a good book in hand.

It seems that however you choose your time, there is no bad way to experience Lake Malawi. Be warned though, you may be tempted to stay there forever.
