Claire Birtwhistle of Robin Pope Safaris writes about the exciting hiking experience available on the scenic hills around Pumulani Lodge. Check out the remarkable views over Lake Malawi!

Take a hike in the hills above “Lake of Stars” for the best views in Malawi

Pumulani Lodge is situated on the west side of the Nankumba Peninsula on the Southern end of Lake Malawi. The hills around Pumulani lodge offer spectacular vistas over Lake Malawi and inland towards the Rift Valley. Pumulani manager Charl and guide Mustafa took regular guests, Jane and Richard, on a hike to the peak directly behind the lodge. It rises about 450m from the lake, and is a steady 1hr 30 minutes up and two hour walk down. There is no easy way to tackle this hill, it’s steep and is not for the unfit or feint hearted, but the views on both sides of the Peninsula are spectacular!

Here are some of the amazing photos that Mustafa took while walking:

If hiking isn’t really you’re thing, there are much gentler walks up and around the hills where the views are still fantastic and amazing birdlife sightings are common. Three different guided walking routes are available.

After the walk, guests can climb into a kayak and enjoy an easy paddle back to the lodge. Of course, Lake Malawi is such a paradise, that some just want to spend all their time barefoot and lying on its warm sandy beaches, enjoying a good book and a cocktail or two instead of donning walking shoes.

We’d suggest doing both. That’s the magic of Malawi.
