Kim's Breaks - Blue Zebra Island Lodge

Blog Category: 'Personal Experience '

Kim Brake is the managing director or Ulendo Safaris, one of Malawi's leading tour operators. As part of her job, checking out lodges, activities, and tourism attractions, happens often, and Kim has decided to share this in the form of a blog!

I am in the middle of whipping around Malawi over the next few weeks checking out a few properties which are new to me before heading to Europe to do so Malawi marketing. Last week Gracie and I headed off on Saturday afternoon to check out a new Island Lodge, which is less than 2 hours from Lilongwe.

Blue Zebra Island Lodge is located off Senga Bay near Salima. This lodge was opened a year ago and has now had time to “bed in” and the young French couple, Estelle &Mathieu, who are managing it are doing a fabulous job.

As you would expect the food is superb and the hosts present and friendly but with the right balance of leaving you to enjoy the place. The Chocolate Fondant is a must have and they make a great Pina Colada. I know, cheesy but I always have to have one when staying close to water and they are a good bench mark to the rest of the cocktail menu, honestly!

Three executive rooms are perched over the lake, built into the rocks and are safari chic, roomy and luxurious with outside seating on their decks and one has a stairway to the lake for a quick dip. Everything you touch is luxurious and there was oodles of hot water from the shower. Private but a bit of a hike from the main area, a positive for noise and privacy though.

I've luxury tents are located in the middle of the lodge and are therefore closer to the pool, bar and dining areas. Whilst being fairly small they are well appointed, have a stylish ensuite bathroom with shower and great views across the lake.

Mathieu is an expert boatman, dive master and all round water fundi. He took us to his favourite dive spot behind the smallest of the 3 islands which make up the Maleri’s and we snorkelled in what, quite frankly, felt like being in a fish tank – amazing colours and so many varieties of fish to see.

Finally a trip to Tam, the masseuse, definitely worth taking an hour to experience her Swedish massage, which was one of the best I have had for a long time but, sadly no time for a pedi!

Our boat ride back to shore proved adventurous as the wind had increased but I had full faith in Mathieu and we arrive safely on the mainland, it a little damp!

In short – I would highly recommend Blue Zebra Island Lodge, it is only 2 hrs from Lilongwe airport and the boat transfer can be organised from Senga Bay or Monkey Bay making it easy to fit into southern itineraries. Personal, luxurious and a relaxed atmosphere.A great addition to Malawian Lake properties.
