Deep within the green fields of tea, under the deep blue skies of Malawi's idyllic Thyolo district lies Tigwilizane Grouping. Here, a group of villagers gather to recycle used paper and make all sorts of precious little things such as cards, place mats, envelopes, gift bags, paper briquettes to be used in place of charcoal for lighting fires, among others.

Central African Wilderness Safaris (CAWS) has been in Malawi since 1987 and its founders, Chris and Pam Badger, have been in travel in a number of different fields since 1980. Between 1987 and 1992 they conducted over 60 safaris throughout Malawi and gained the knowledge and passion for the country that remains the foundation of the business today. Originally the well-known and highly respected Wilderness Safaris Group owned the company, and in 2014 the Badgers became the sole owners.

This month, Blue Zebra Island Lodge has announced its latest project to raise awareness of conservation with youth people. In collaboration with Lake Malawi National Park, they launched an educational program involving a group of 15 children aged between 12 and 17 from the Local schools Wildlife Club of Maganga Primary and Secondary School. Initially giving the group of 15 the chance to visit Nankoma Island with the Malawi National Parks game scouts, the program is scheduled to take place once a month in order to allow all of the 80 wildlife club members to visit the island.

Game Haven Lodge, situated in the Chimwenya Game Park, are pleased to announce the continued growth of their already impressive game herd. After the most recent birth, the number of Roans within the park has increased to 4, with the other female still pregnant. Miss G, the female giraffe of the park is also looking heavily pregnant, with her expected to give birth within the next 3 months. With this constant growth, to what is now a 151 strong herd, Game Haven are now exploring the possibility of relocating some of their species to allow more space for roaming. This may include species such as the sable, which already has a sizable herd of 45.

This year saw the Lake Malawi Sailing Marathon celebrate its 30th anniversary, offering a week of non-stop action as sailors from around the world pushed their endurance, speed and skill to the very limit. Kayak Africa's own skipper Matola Mwawa and his sailing partner Mcford M'bwana were also there, for the first time, to compete! Matola, who works at Kayak Africa from their base overlooking the beautiful Lake Malawi was able to sail in the competition thanks to the generosity of Hobie Cat South Africa. After impressing with his sailing prowess, the director of Hobie Cat donated the yacht to Malawi, which Matola and Mcford then went on to win their division with!

Coffee plays only a secondary role in Malawi, at least economically. Only two thousand metric tons of coffee being grown annually. Only half of that will find its way to other countries through exports. Overall, Malawi captures a negligible part of the World's coffee trade. Nevertheless, coffee farmers from this small country between Tanzania and Zambia produce coffee quality they should be proud of.

June brings winter in Malawi with cold evenings and warm afternoons. The Nyika National Park is experiencing temperatures as low as 0 degrees Celsius with frost on the paths in the early morning. Simultaneously the landscape takes on the golden brown look of the mid dry season. Liwonde's famous elephant herds are regularly coming into the Wilderness camps and lodges in search of food and water, giving guests some amazing close encounters, while the leopard sightings in Chelinda are becoming more and more frequent.

Majete Wildlife Reserve is a great conservation success story, having been turned around from serious poaching and revived to Malawi's only Big 5 reserve. In August 2012 Robin Pope Safaris (RPS), who run Mkulumadzi (Majete), and Pumulani (Cape Maclear) was instrumental in the reintroduction of lions in support of African Parks' work in the reserve. Bua River Lodge has now announced that they have completed restoring their walking tracks ready for the new season, and their experienced and trained guides have established new treks and walks. They range from an easy 2 km stroll to the beautiful Chisaka Falls, to a more challenging 8 or 9 hour hike through the Bvundikira Hills, a route that requires two crossings of the Bua River - on foot! - and everything in between.

Cheesey tunes, a free braai and races, this was a great night all in the name of two good causes, the Chembe Village Project and The Mango Tree Nursery. Both organisations work hard to support young Malawi children, offering food, safety, and education - but sadly they are reliant on donations.

In the early morning of the 22nd of March, 4 ½ year old Rhino Nyanyale♂ was seen in the Rhino Sanctuary in Liwonde National Park with a three strand wire noose tight around his face. The snare wire was seen to have restrained his upper lip and also affected his nostril cavities.
