The past few weeks have seen 13 choirs from the Manda Wilderness Area fiercely competing for the coveted title of 'Star of the Lake'. In the end the Chicaia Village Choir emerged as the undisputed star of the 5th Annual Manda Wilderness Choir Festival after mesmerising the audience with their harmonic performance, completed with clever choreography on the steps of the historic Roman Catholic Church on the shores of Lake Malawi.

This month, Blue Zebra Island Lodge has announced its latest project to raise awareness of conservation with youth people. In collaboration with Lake Malawi National Park, they launched an educational program involving a group of 15 children aged between 12 and 17 from the Local schools Wildlife Club of Maganga Primary and Secondary School. Initially giving the group of 15 the chance to visit Nankoma Island with the Malawi National Parks game scouts, the program is scheduled to take place once a month in order to allow all of the 80 wildlife club members to visit the island.

Game Haven Lodge, situated in the Chimwenya Game Park, are pleased to announce the continued growth of their already impressive game herd. After the most recent birth, the number of Roans within the park has increased to 4, with the other female still pregnant. Miss G, the female giraffe of the park is also looking heavily pregnant, with her expected to give birth within the next 3 months. With this constant growth, to what is now a 151 strong herd, Game Haven are now exploring the possibility of relocating some of their species to allow more space for roaming. This may include species such as the sable, which already has a sizable herd of 45.

This year saw the Lake Malawi Sailing Marathon celebrate its 30th anniversary, offering a week of non-stop action as sailors from around the world pushed their endurance, speed and skill to the very limit. Kayak Africa's own skipper Matola Mwawa and his sailing partner Mcford M'bwana were also there, for the first time, to compete! Matola, who works at Kayak Africa from their base overlooking the beautiful Lake Malawi was able to sail in the competition thanks to the generosity of Hobie Cat South Africa. After impressing with his sailing prowess, the director of Hobie Cat donated the yacht to Malawi, which Matola and Mcford then went on to win their division with!

Only half of that will find its way to other countries through exports. Overall, Malawi captures a negligible part of the World's coffee trade. June brings winter in Malawi with cold evenings and warm afternoons. The Nyika National Park is experiencing temperatures as low as 0 degrees Celsius with frost on the paths in the early morning. Simultaneously the landscape takes on the golden brown look of the mid dry season. Liwonde's famous elephant herds are regularly coming into the Wilderness camps and lodges in search of food and water, giving guests some amazing close encounters, while the leopard sightings in Chelinda are becoming more and more frequent.

Malawians Style's most recent fundraiser had Lilongwe residents donning knee high socks and school ties with their 'back to school' themed party. Cheesey tunes, a free braai and races, this was a great night all in the name of two good causes, the Chembe Village Project and The Mango Tree Nursery. Both organisations work hard to support young Malawi children, offering food, safety, and education - but sadly they are reliant on donations.

In the early morning of the 22nd of March, 4 ½ year old Rhino Nyanyale♂ was seen in the Rhino Sanctuary in Liwonde National Park with a three strand wire noose tight around his face. The snare wire was seen to have restrained his upper lip and also affected his nostril cavities.

Project Mawingu is the code name for Kenya Airways' 10 year plan, which will see them more than double their fleet and increase their destinations from 62 to 115. In August, Malawi's Majete Wildlife Reserve will become the proud recipient of four lions from South Africa, completing the return of the 'Big Five' to this iconic reserve situated in Malawi's lower Shire River valley. The reintroduction of lions marks a significant milestone in the rehabilitation of the 70 000 hectare Majete reserve. Historically lions were considered to be common in the Lower Shire Valley but by the early 1960s scouts in Majete were recording only one lion every 100 patrol days. Over the years, poaching took its toll and there have been no reports of lions in the region since the 1980s.

As well as the successful introduction of leopard last October and the expected arrival of lion into Majete this August, a new tourism management team was formed. This began with the arrival of Vasco Munthali, a professional safari guide in February. He has a wealth of experience in guiding with local and international tourists in Malawi and Zambia. Shelley Preece is the new marketing manager. After 20 years of working in post-conflict development she retrained as a lodge / tourism manager in 2010 and joined Majete in March.

Ethiopian Airlines have introduced an improved summer schedule from London Heathrow to Lilongwe effective from the 16th June 2012. Three flights a week from LHR will operate via Addis Ababa and another three will operate via Addis and Lubumbashi (a quick technical stop with no disembarkation). The schedule for return flights has also improved with the connection time in Addis Ababa reduced by a further 35 minutes.

Guests at Mvuu camp and Lodge have been hearing Titus the lion roaring again and staff are sure that it's only a matter of time until there's another sighting of him. There are plans to give the lion population in Liwonde a boost, by introducing a few lionesses into the park sometime in August. All fingers are crossed in the hope that the lion re-introduction will go smoothly as planned and help raise the status of Liwonde to a big five national park.
