In August, Malawi's Majete Wildlife Reserve will become the proud recipient of four lions from South Africa, completing the return of the 'Big Five' to this iconic reserve situated in Malawi's lower Shire River valley.
The reintroduction of lions marks a significant milestone in the rehabilitation of the 70 000 hectare Majete reserve. Historically lions were considered to be common in the Lower Shire Valley but by the early 1960s scouts in Majete were recording only one lion every 100 patrol days. Over the years, poaching took its toll and there have been no reports of lions in the region since the 1980s.

Read more...Plentiful & Varied Wildlife at Wilderness Camps and LodgesPosted on: Tuesday, March 20, 2012 / 00:00 hrsAlthough less frequent, guests can still see elephant out on the river despite the rains. Whenever staff spot elephant on the river, they get all the guests on an impromptu boat safari, so they can have a better look. Most elephant sightings however are occurring in the mopane woodlands around the park during game drives. Zebra sightings have been encouraging throughout the month, usually herds of bashful zebra scatter when they hear approaching game vehicles, they now seemed to have adjusted to the sound and appear more relaxed.
There was a sighting of approximately 20 banded Mongoose . This is an exceptionally big group to be spotted at Mvuu. The Banded Mongoose lives in permanent and cohesive groups consisting of on average 15 adults with their offspring. Group sizes in this species are largest for all carnivores. Both male and female transfer to new packs, and in this manner population gene flow is accomplished. On the same day a huge number of red velvet mites were spotted in the area. The minute red insect dancing across the earth is stunning at first glance although you need a microscope to really appreciate it!
One female hippo was seen with a one week old calf in a little pool in the mopane woodlands near the river. One theory goes that a female hippo seems to somehow know the sex of her calf before giving birth, a pregnant cow that has a male calf in her will often leave her family group to give birth in a separate river or dam. The dominant male reacts very aggressively to new males trying to join his family group even if the newborn is his own, so for this reason the pregnant female leaves the group to give birth and stay on her own with the newborn male calf until he is strong enough to move quickly and hopefully avoid dangerous confrontations with the dominant bull when they rejoin the rest of the family. Judging from this hippo's separation from the rest of the pod, staff are guessing this newcomer at Mvuu is a little boy.
30 sable were spotted near the staff road. The flourishing vegetation growing throughout the park (thanks to the rains) provides the park's elusive antelope herds with the ideal conditions for grazing and they now venture out into the open to feed more frequently.
A Southern File snake was seen near the Mvuu workshop. This snake is often much sought after due to its rarity and beauty. It has a distinctly triangular shape with keeled scales. Whilst it will gladly make a meal of lizards and small vertebrates, its feeding preference is actually other snakes.
Pel's Fishing Owls have been spotted closer to both the camp and lodge this month perched on top of a tree near that the camp dining area.
A sub adult African Cuckoo Hawk was spotted opposite Mvuu Camp. This medium sized raptor is mostly solitary and can be seen flying from tree to tree with short glides. Grey Headed Parrots were seen in large numbers nesting in Baobab trees on Msanje Road.
One guest spotted a total of 69 new bird species on their visit to Mvuu this month. Adding to a month of great birding were sightings off Red-backed Shrike, Retz's Helmet-Shrike, White Helmet-Shrike, Blue-checked Bee-eater, European Bee-eater, Carmine Bee-eater, Brown Snake Eagle, Crowned Eagle, African Hawk Eagle, Dickinson's Kestrel, Lillian's Lovebird and African Harrier-Hawk. We also spotted Brown- Headed Parrot, Arnot's Chat, White-backed Night Heron, Livingstone's Flycatcher, Wahlberg's eagle and thrush Nightingale.
Chelinda Camp and Chelinda Lodge
Many herds of antelope and zebra have been seen often seeking refuge in the pine forests during the night before they return to the grasslands to graze in the mornings.
Hyaena are back on the plateau and are up to their usual tricks: they strategically chase their prey into the dams where they find it easier to make a kill. Chelinda can now fully confirm the presence of wild dog on the Nyika as one of their guides saw one with his own eyes.
A serval cat and female leopard were spotted near the Airstrip. On February 17th a big male leopard was seen and on February 20th, another leopard was seen by Chelinda Bridge bringing the total leopard count for the month to three.
A herd of 10-15 elephants were seen near Chisanga Waterfall. Seeing such a big herd on the plateau is very rare, usually only a lone elephant is seen once in a while or small herd consisting of up to nine animals at most.
Augur buzzards have started to congregate in groups and on one afternoon drive 11 were spotted together. Other good birds spotted at Chelinda this month include Montane widow bird, Montagu's Harrier, Pallid Harrier, Hildebrandt's Francolin, Mountain Cisticola, Black cuckoo shrike, Lizard buzzard and a melanistic Augur Buzzard. Melanism, or melanosis, is a condition caused by a genetic mutation that gives a bird excess amounts of melanin in its feathers. This makes the feathers much darker than normal plumage, and many melanistic birds appear completely brown or black.

More than 1000 baby crocodiles have been seen along the river near the Mvuu Lodge lagoon recently along with some impressive elephant sightings. A herd of 80 elephants with a string of calves were spotted near Nangando, south of Ntangai with one of the larger bulls in the herd uspected to be in musth. (During cyclical periods of 'musth' bull elephants are at their most aggressive and sexually active stage).
Over 100 buffalo were seen in the rhino sanctuary along with 2 black rhinos,18 Lichtenstein's hartebeest, 11 sables and 31 zebras. Not to mention the side-striped sand snake that was seen sneaking up on a bird's nest! The rains bring with them many migrant birds who come back from the less hospitable climates north of the equator. Regular recent spottings include Ospreys, African Fish Eagles, White Breasted Cormorants, Bohm's, Bee-eaters, Woodland Kingfishers, Pied Kingfishers, Malachite Kingfishers, Lillian's Lovebirds and many more.
