Vwasa Wildlife Reserve
Rumphi is a small town surrounded by hills which acts as a springboard for visits to Nyika National Park and Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve. It is a market centre for the agricultural lands to the west and is usually bustling with ativity. There is a purposeful feel about the place with everyone busily engaged: buying, selling, catching and loading buses.

The little town seems prosperous enough but the area has had mixed fortunes. The main cash crop is coffee and fluctuations in world prices have often seen the menfolk forced to seek work in the gold mines of South Africa. Today, the large number of buses and the extensive bus station suggest that there is still reliance on nearby Mzuzu for employment as well as services.

A few kilometres out of town, the Matunkha Eco Tourism offers accommodation and a variety of cultural experiences, tied in with the community projects being run there.
