SPONSOR AN ISLAND CHILD

There are currently over 700 children on Likoma Island, Lake Malawi, Central Africa who do not attend Primary or Secondary school at all due to lack of funds for fees, books and pens.

Education is a luxury which many islanders can ill afford.

The plan is that we will eventually find enough people to support these kids so that all of them can go to school all the time.

You the sponsor can be guaranteed that every penny you donate will go straight towards education .Unlike some other charities there are NO hidden admin charges – 100% of your money goes where you want it.

On the Island, the owner and manager of Kaya Mawa lodge have kindly agreed to volunteer to be hands-on on-site monitors to make sure that your generosity is not being taken advantage of.

You the sponsor will get a photo of the child you are supporting, and an annual letter from the child updating you on their results as well as a report from the local headmaster. We are looking for people to support these children for as little as £2.50 a month for Primary School kids and £8 a month for Secondary . We would ask that to really make a difference, please sponsor an Island Child for at least 5 years, and as it is such a small amount, why not sponsor more than one?.

These are the costs to sponsor a primary school boy or girl on Likoma Island:

1) Uniform £6.00
2) Exercise books (8 per term) £3.00
3) Pencils (5 per term) £2.50
4) Pens (5 per term) £2.50
5) Book Deposit £2.50
6) General purpose fund £2.00
7) Lunch allowance (during term) £10.00
---------
£28.50
---------
Tuition is free for all primary school students, however they pay exam fees of £7.00 to sit their primary school certificate.

So for as little as £2.50 a month for a period of five years, a child can be sponsored through primary school.

For a secondary school student the costs for a year are the same with the following extras:
1) School fees £65.00
+ books pens etc £28.50
---------
£93.50
---------
Again, for as little as £ 8.00 per month, for 5 years, you can take a child all the way through secondary school. There are over 300 boys and girls on Likoma Island unable to afford to go to secondary school.

LAKE MALAWI PROJECTS

"Supporting Communities Through Community Development, International Friendship and Responsibility"

Background to Lake Malawi Projects
Lake Malawi Projects (LMP ) is a small UK based charity, founded in April 2001. Its aims are to provide initially funding and advice to villages of Likoma and Chisimula Islands in Malawi, and eventually also to the nearby villages of Mozambique, so that village communities can undertake projects of their own design in order to raise living standards. To each village LMP pledges a minimum £6000. Prior to funding villages are required to write five year development plans which must be agreed upon by the whole village. Each project in each village is run by a committee of four people, whilst a Central Village Project Committee is responsible for the overall management and implementation of all projects each villages five year plan.

To date two villages on Likoma, Makulawe and Yofu, have embarked on the implementation of their five year plans. Two other villages, Khuyu and Chinysanya, are also being funded by LMP in one-off agricultural projects supported by the ministry of agriculture. LMP also expects to undertake projects in the future for the locality that by their nature will benefit all village communities.

For its funding LMP has relied up to December 2002 solely on individual donations. From January 2003 LMP will seek funds from major donors. By the end of 2003 LMP plans to secure funds to employ one paid coordinator in the UK, and a minimum of two coordinators in Malawi.

Background of Project Area
Likoma and Chisimula Islands, separated by 8 km, are situated in the fresh water lake of Lake Malawi 40km from the Malawi mainland and 5 km from the Mozambique mainland. Both islands rely on trade with the nearby Mozambican villages for firewood and most building materials. The population of both islands totals 12000 people. Average per capita income in the country is listed by the World Bank as $ per year. Transportation to and off the island is by boat. There are only three motorized vehicles for both islands. None of the villages have running water in their homes, and even whilst electricity is now being introduced to the island of Likoma most villagers will not be able to afford the service. The main income for both islands is fishing and the staple food is maize. For the latter both islands are virtually totally dependent on maize brought in by boat from the Malawi mainland. Each year, especially during the months of December – March the islands experience food shortages. Because of this LMP is making agriculture a priority for the islands, and also supporting the construction of boats as maize can often be purchased during from nearby towns on the Mozambican coast providing transportation is available. Aids is a major problem. On the largest island, Likoma, Aids has left the island with 600 orphans out of a population of 9000 people.
